Costa and Barclaycard launch U.K.’s first reusable contactless payment coffee cup, according to a report published on December 10, 2018.

Costa Coffee and Barclaycard entered into a collaboration to launch the U.K.’s first reusable coffee-cup with integrated contactless payment technology. Costa Coffee’s Clever Cup is powered by Barclaycard’s bPay technology. It allows the users to make purchases with the cup, top up their in-store credit balance, and track payments online or via a dedicated app on both iPhone and Android devices. This new coffee-cup was launched in November in Costa Coffee stores across the U.K. Moreover, this development will be beneficial in reducing the volume of discarded coffee cups.

These cups are sold in packaging that are made from recycled coffee cups. The Clever Cup has a silicon base and a contactless chip that can be detached, which will make washing of the cup easier. The technology integrated within the cup allows the customer to use the cup wherever the contactless payment symbol is available. Moreover, it can be used in places other than Costa Coffee stores. This new innovation is part of Costa Coffee’s re-launch of its next generation reusable range, which encourages customers to use reusable cups instead of single-use takeaway cups. The price of Clever Cup is US$ 19.15 and US$ 1.28 from every sale is donated to The Costa Foundation.

Jason Cotta, Managing Director at Costa Coffee, said, “Contactless technology has become increasingly prominent in our daily lives and through the launch of the new Costa-Barclaycard Clever Cup we hope to appeal to those tech-savvy customers to help facilitate and drive environmentally friendly behavior.”
